Service & Utility Bodies

Service bodies that keep tools locked, dry and in reach. A service body puts lockable side compartments on a pickup or chassis cab, with an open bed in the middle for materials. A mechanic body adds the structure for a crane, air compressor and power. We supply and install STAHL service bodies, and install Royal, CM and DuraMag bodies and Stellar TMAX mechanic bodies. Sizes run from 76" pickup-replacement bodies to long mechanic trucks. We match the body to your cab-to-axle (CA) and GVWR, then set up the compartments, lighting and equipment.

Who it's for

  • Franchise dealers & lessors

56", 60" and 84" CA chassis cabs made ready for the lot or a lease customer. One spec, repeated across the order.

  • Fleets & contractors

Plumbing, electrical, HVAC, utility and field-service crews who need tools secured and organized every day.

  • Equipment & mechanic crews

Field mechanics who need a crane, air and power on the truck. See the Stellar TMAX and CM SBC crane bodies.

  • Adding to a body you run

Racks, drawers, shelving and lighting added to the service body already on your truck. We quote and install.

Which one fits

  1. 1. Match body length to CA

Most service bodies follow the same rule: an 8' (98") body needs about 56" CA, a 9' (108–110") body about 60" CA, and an 11' (132–134") body 84" CA. STAHL and Royal both publish these. Pickup-replacement bodies (CM CMG/CMA, 76–82") fit 38–42" CA trucks.

  2. 2. SRW or DRW

Single-rear-wheel bodies are narrower, about 79–80" wide, with shallower compartments. Dual-rear-wheel bodies run 92–96" wide with deeper ones. STAHL lists 13.6–13.8" deep SRW compartments against 19.6" on DRW.

  3. 3. Steel or aluminum

Steel (galvanneal on STAHL and Royal) costs less and is easy to repair. Aluminum saves weight: CM's CMA aluminum body in the 110" x 94" size is listed at 1,030 lb, against 1,745 lb for the steel CMG. Stellar says its aluminum bodies weigh 300–2,300 lb less than steel.

  4. 4. Compartment layout

Count what has to fit. Vertical compartments hold tall tools and shelving. Horizontal ones over the wheels hold long items. A 40" compartment height is common. High-profile bodies (Royal 56") add storage but cut visibility.

  5. 5. Doors, locks and lids

Swing doors are standard. DuraMag R-Series uses roll-up doors, so you don't stand in the street to open them. Ask about keyed-alike locks, flip-top lids and master locking.

  6. 6. Crane, air and power

If you need to lift, you need a crane-rated body and a heavier chassis. CM's SBC crane body pairs with Tiger or Auto Crane units. Stellar TMAX bodies are sized by crane, from 4,000 lb (TMAX 16K) to 14,000 lb (TMAX 3).

  7. 7. Stay under the CDL line

A Class B CDL applies at 26,001 lb GVWR and up. Body, crane and compressor weight all count against payload, so pick the chassis and body together. Aluminum can help crews stay non-CDL.

  8. 8. Plan racks and accessories now

Plan the ladder rack, conduit tube, drawers and lighting with the body, so mounts and wiring go in once. See cap & rack options.

Fitment: body length by cab-to-axle

Most bodies need 56" CA for 8', 60" for 9' and 84" for 11'. Pickup-replacement bodies fit 38–42" CA. Cranes need a crane-rated body and a chassis sized for it. We confirm fitment on your VIN before ordering, and the payload calculator shows what's left after the body

Questions

What's the difference between a service body and a mechanic body?

A service body is side compartments plus an open bed for tools and materials. A mechanic body is built heavier to carry a crane, air compressor and power, and usually goes on a larger chassis. Stellar's TMAX line and CM's SBC are mechanic and crane bodies.

What CA do I need for an 11' service body?

84" CA on a dual-rear-wheel chassis, per STAHL and Royal. For 8' bodies, 56" CA. For 9', 60" CA. Send us the VIN and we'll confirm.

Can I put a service body on my pickup?

Yes. Pickup-replacement bodies like the CM CMG/CMA in 76", 81" and 82" are built for Ram (38"), GM (42") and Ford (40") CA. We remove the factory box and move the lights and wiring.

Steel or aluminum?

Steel costs less and is easy to repair. Aluminum saves weight you can use as payload. On CM's 110" x 94" body, the aluminum CMA is about 700 lb lighter than the steel CMG.

Will a crane put my truck over the CDL limit?

It can. A Class B CDL applies at 26,001 lb GVWR and up. We spec the chassis, body and crane together, so the truck does the lifting you need with the license your crew has.

Do you install ladder racks and drawers in service bodies?

Yes. We install ladder racks, conduit tubes, drawer units and shelving, and wire the lighting at the same time as the body.

I'm a lessor. Can you build the same body across a fleet order?

Yes. Send one spec and the unit list. We'll quote the order and build to the same layout every time. See Dealers & fleet lessors.
